I must admit that the idea of moving to Ethiopia to plant an English speaking church at first seemed a bit unusual to me. I mean, it goes against everything we believe to be true and important about missions. After all our desire is to see indigenous, culturally relevant expressions of The Church, right? How does planting an English church in a foreign country accomplish this? The one answer is that there are tens of thousands of English speakers within Addis Ababa, both expatriates and nationals who could benefit from an English speaking Vineyard church. But the impact doesn't stop there, rather there has been some evidence that this kind of church can be an effective launch pad for national churches to be planted.
Dan Bowers in his doctoral dissertation titled "International Churches as Launching Pads for Mission to Indigenous Peoples" discusses the huge impact that J.Christy Wilson (missionary to Afghanistan who later taught at Gordon Conwell seminary) believed that English speaking international churches could make. Bowers writes,
"He [J. Christy Wilson writing in the book Today's Tentmakers]believes that this dispersion [of Christian expatriates abroad today] presents a great opportunity for English-language churches to not only minister to expatriates, but also to reach out to the indigenous people. He suggests three main purposes for international churches: First, to provide fellowship, renewal, and growth for Christian workers serving abroad. Second, to bring a Gospel witness to the growing number of non-Christian expatriates. And third, to serve as a base for witness to the indigenous people. 'In conjunction with the ministries of missionaries, these congregations can be stepping-stones to cross-cultural witness which must take place if the world is [to be] evangelized.'"
The potential for impact is huge. Lord, may this work be full of mission and become a launch pad.

Hi there Shannons!!!
Wow - wildly exciting! God is so good. We really should chat some time before you move --- we too would love to live in Ethiopia some day. While we were there, we had the incredible opportunity to travel with a local pastor - around Addis and the surrounding country to see church plants and witness the incredible movement of God that is going on there. Such awesome stories of God's incredible work and transformation and the Holy Spirt's movement. We heard amazing testimonies of folks coming to Christ through the Holy Spirit speaking directly. Folks that underwent severe persecution during the Derg's reign and had incredible stories of God's protection. We are now partnering with a church there in ministry to orphan's within Addis. It would be so fun to talk and hear your testimony of God's call. Blessings, Sarah Visser
